What we do
Here’s a taster of what’s in store
This is what it’s all about: activities that offer challenge, excitement and adventure and the knowledge you pick up along the way through structured training and first-hand experience. Adventure Training, Band, Camps, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Fieldcraft, Flying and Gliding, Shooting and Sport are just a few of the activities on offer in the Air Cadets.
Flying
Flying is the most exciting and prestigious of the activities offered by the RAF Air Cadets, and the activity that sets us above all other youth organisations. Whether it's a firsts Air Experience Flight in a Grob Tutor at RAF Leeming, or an opportunity to fly in a different aircraft on camp, you're sure to learn a lot and have a great time!
Gliding
Gliding experiences take place at a Volunteer Gliding Squadron, where you will begin your Aviation Training Package. You'll learn all about aerodynamics and controlling the aircraft, first in a classroom, then taking control and practising what you're learnt in the air.
Camps
There are lots of opportunities to go on camps as a cadet. From RAF stations to Adventure Training Centres, you'll be able to take part in a range of activities over a few days, spending time with your fellow cadets and learning new skills along the way!
Shooting
Target shooting is a great experience for cadets of all ages. Cadets begin by shooting at distances of 25 metres, and can advance to distances of up to 1,000 yards! You can gain a range of marksmanship awards and badges, and compete in annual shooting competitions. Safety precautions are taken at all times, and strict regulations are followed to ensure that this remains both an enjoyable and safe experience for cadets. All cadets are given intensive training and must pass a Weapons Handling Test (WHT) before being allowed to take part.
First Aid
First aid is an important life skill, and it's one that you will have plenty of opportunity to learn and develop as a cadet. From a basic first aid course, to undertaking qualifications and taking part in competitions, you'll have lots of practical opportunities to develop your skills.
Adventure Training
Cadets can take part in a wide range of adventurous activities, both at Squadron and Wing level, and also at our Adventure Training Centres. Rock climbing, abseiling, hill walking, mountain-biking, canoeing, high ropes and sailing are all par for the course. Adventure Training is an essential part of the training syllabus and the place where team effort really matters – you’ll build new friendships, and learn to rely on the other people you’re with to get the job done. It also lets you show off your leadership qualities.
Music and Bands
The RAF Air Cadets provides opportunities for cadets to develop and showcase their musical talents. Whether you’re looking to learn an instrument like side drum or bell lyre, or already a musician, you can join bands at squadron, wing, region, or national level. It’s a fantastic way to perform, build friendships, and represent the Air Cadets through music. Cadets from our wing have performed at Durham Cathedral, The Inter-Services Rugby semi-final, and Edinburgh Castle!
Drill and Ceremonial
Drill and Ceremonial training is introduced from the very beginning of a cadet’s journey, helping to instil a strong sense of pride, discipline and belonging within the organisation. RAFAC cadets are given the opportunity to take part in a range of high-profile ceremonial parades throughout the year. These include events such as the Battle of Britain commemorations, Remembrance services, and ATC Sunday. Participation in these occasions allows cadets to develop their drill skills, uphold RAF traditions, and represent their organisation with pride in their local communities.
Sports
Sport is one of the core activities in the RAF Air Cadets and cadets get the chance to take part in enjoyable physical activities, both at Squadron and Wing level. Ranging from unit sports nights to competitions against fellow Squadrons, our cadets and staff can also obtain formal and nationally recognised qualifications as part of their sporting experiences.
Training & Education
The RAF Air Cadets delivers outstanding aviation training and expanding opportunities in STEM, leadership, cyber, drones, space, and digital technologies. Through strong partnerships, cadets and staff can also gain valuable external qualifications. Our aim is to inspire confidence, develop skills, and open pathways for success in whatever direction life takes them.
DofE
The RAF Air Cadets is one of the biggest providers of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, and it's something we encourage all our cadets to get involved in. It's highly respected by employers, and gives you a chance to undertake a range of activities, from expeditions and sports, to volunteering and learning new skills.
Fieldcraft
You will be taught the basic skills on a regular basis, giving you the knowledge required for taking part on exercises: putting your skills into practice. You will experience blank firing, sleeping in the field and eating from ration packs. Your specialized skill set of operating as a section, navigating in challenging environments and camouflage/concealment will be put to the test; mastering the art of seeing without being seen.
